Snyder Tosses Bat, Injures 2 Women and Is Arrested

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Cory Snyder of the Maine Guides in the International League was arrested and charged with assault Thursday night after he injured two women spectators by throwing his bat in a fit of disgust.

After Snyder popped out, he hurled his bat into the stands, where it hit two Rochester women in front-row seats. Dorothy Matteson, 61, suffered a cut mouth, and Debra Ritz, 26, suffered a broken nose. Both women were treated and released at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Snyder, who played high school ball at Canyon Country Canyon in Southern California, was arrested following his ejection from the game after a sixth-inning brawl and was issued an order to appear today at City Court on two third-degree assault charges, police said.

Snyder, a former All-American at BYU and a member of the 1984 Olympic team, triggered the bench-clearing brawl in the sixth inning of the Red Wings’ 3-2 victory after being hit with a pitch by Rochester’s Bill Swaggerty.
