Santa Ana : ‘Century High’ Chosen as Name for New School
A new high school to be located at Grand and McFadden avenues will be named Century High to mark the first 100 years of the Santa Ana Unified School District.
The school board recently chose the name from a list of 30 suggestions submitted from officials and residents.
The winning suggestion was submitted by board member Joan Wilkinson. It won over such possibilities as Christa McAuliffe, the New Hampshire teacher who died in the Jan. 28 space shuttle disaster; Challenger, the name of the space shuttle; Al Davis, Rancho Grande, McG and Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla.
District Supt. Edward S. Krass said McAuliffe High lost out because none of the other city high schools are named for people (Santa Ana, Saddleback, Santa Ana Valley), while elementary and intermediate schools all take the names of famous people or educators.
Four elementary schools are due to be considered by the state next week, he said, and McAuliffe will be considered for one of those.
The new high school is expected to accommodate a first class of about 1,800 students for the 1988-89 school year.
