Taxing Day for Rostenkowski: He’s Cited for Drunk Driving
Rep. Dan Rostenkowski (D-Ill.), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, was arrested over the weekend while returning from a reunion at a military academy and charged with drunk driving.
Rostenkowski, 58, of Chicago posted $497.50 bail after refusing to take a breath test, police said.
He was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and ordered to appear in Racine County Circuit Court on June 16.
The congressman was pulled over by an officer outside Burlington at 1:15 a.m. Sunday and had difficulty completing a manual dexterity test, police said. The arresting officer said he noticed a strong odor of intoxicants in the vehicle.
Rostenkowski told the officer he was returning from a reunion at St. John’s Military Academy in Delafield and denied being drunk, the police report said. He was alone at the time of his arrest.
He was contacted at his summer home today in Genoa City and confirmed the report of his arrest but denied being intoxicated.
Rostenkowski was elected to Congress in 1958 and has been reelected ever since.
