Hall of Famer Aurel Joliat, who played with the Montreal Canadiens for 16 years and was on three Stanley Cup champions, died in Ottawa, according to a friend. Joliat was 85.

Bill Galloway, who described himself as Joliat’s life-long friend, said Joliat died apparently of a heart attack as he was leaving his home with his wife, Yvette, for a doctor’s appointment.

Joliat joined the Canadiens in 1922 and played with them until his retirement in 1938, scoring 270 goals and winning the Hart Trophy as Most Valuable Player in the National Hockey League, in 1930. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1947.
