The Rev. Ralph D. Abernathy, former head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and aide to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has suffered a stroke.

Abernathy, 60, entered Crawford Long Memorial Hospital on Monday and was in satisfactory condition, hospital spokeswoman Stephanie Stone said Tuesday. She said Abernathy was awake and alert, and that the stroke had not caused paralysis.
