The World : U.S. Delays on Waldheim
Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III won’t decide whether to bar former U.N. Secretary General Kurt Waldheim from the United States until after Sunday’s Austrian presidential runoff, Justice Department spokesman Patrick Korten said. However, he denied that the election was a factor in the decision. Waldheim is alleged to have committed war crimes while stationed in the Balkans as a German officer during World War II. Meanwhile, Israeli Justice Minister Yitzhak Modai said his country does not have enough hard evidence to indict Waldheim. Modai added that more information will be sought from the U.S. government.
