MUSIC NOTES : 2 EVENTS SET TO BENEFIT SYMPHONY

Share

Two summer events to raise money for the financially troubled Capistrano Valley Symphony are on tap. According to Patty Clarke, the orchestra’s manager, the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce has designated the orchestra as the benefiting charity of “A Night on the California Riviera,” to be held at 6 p.m. June 20, at the new Pavilion Shopping Center at the corner of Golden Lantern Street and Dana Point Harbor Drive.

The orchestra won’t be playing at the event, Clarke said, but a jazz quartet made up of orchestra members, led by clarinetist Gary Matsuura, will perform. A special benefit auction will take place at 8 p.m.

Additionally, the organization plans to hold a fund-raising “Walk/Jog-A-Thon” from 10 a.m. to noon June 28 at the Dana Hills High School track.

According to Clarke, the events will help pay off a deficit of more than $5,000 incurred during the 1985-86 season and raise money for the 1986-87 season.

“We want to be on a little firmer financial ground before we formally announce our new plans, but we do hope to offer a major concert in each quarter of the new season in addition to underwritten events such as the ‘Messiah,’ ” Clarke said.

The 60-member Capistrano Valley Symphony was formed by conductor Donn Laurence Mills in January, 1985, to provide classical music to south county communities. The organization received grants of $3,000 from the City of San Juan Capistrano and $1,500 from the Mission Viejo Co. at the end of its first season and performed at the Dana Point Whale Festival in March, in addition to offering several subscription concerts. However, poor ticket sales caused cancellation of three of the five concerts scheduled during the 1985-86 season.

The Center Dance Alliance, formed to promote and raise funds for dance presentations at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa, is seeking new members.
