Orange County Roundup : Youth Soccer Teams Meet in First Irvine Cup

Twenty-four youth soccer teams, most from Orange County, will compete this weekend in the first Irvine Cup soccer tournament at UC Irvine.

Sponsored by the Irvine Co. in conjunction with UCI and the American Youth Soccer Organization, the Division 3 and 4 girls’ and boys’ teams will play matches Saturday and Sunday, with final rounds scheduled for June 15.

The soccer fields are located behind Crawford Hall on the UCI campus. Opening ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. Saturday on the main playing field; games will begin at 10. Games Sunday begin at 1 p.m.

UC Irvine will be well represented in water polo at the U.S. Olympic Festival as six Anteaters have been selected for the competition, which will be in Houston from July 25-Aug. 3.

The Olympic Festival, formerly called the National Sports Festival, gives collegiate athletes and other amateurs an opportunity to compete in an Olympics-like setting. Last year’s festival was held in Baton Rouge, La.

UCI players include junior goalie Mark Maizel, a graduate of Villa Park High School, and junior Greg Wilson (El Toro), both of whom will be playing on the East team.

Junior Mike Doting (Tustin), sophomore Tony Bell (El Dorado) and junior Mike Halphide (Servite) will play on the West team. Sophomore Chris Duplanty, originally from Hawaii, will compete for the South.

Registration has begun for Ron Martin’s Summer School and Sports Camp, scheduled for June 23-Aug. 15 at the All Sports Club in Anaheim.

The camp is open to students in grades 3 through 6. Tuition is $50 a week, with a rate of $30 for a second child. Parents have various options for sign-ups that include instruction by the hour, day, week or entire session.

Surfing legends Shaun Tomson, David Nuuhiwa, Corky Carroll, Phil Edwards, Mike Doyle and Lance Carson will be among the participants on Saturday and Sunday in the 11th T Street Long Board Surfing Classic in San Clemente.

More than 90 contestants are scheduled to compete in the world’s longest-running long board surfing event. The first heat is scheduled to begin at 6:30 a.m. each day.

Jeff Bishop, recently named basketball coach at Santa Ana Valley High School, will run the Blessed Sacrament West Coast basketball camp July 7-19 for boys in grades 3 through 11 and girls in grades 6 through 11.

The $60 cost includes shoes, T-shirts, refreshments and professional speakers. However, no child will be turned away for lack of funds.

Bishop also is looking for people to sponsor underprivileged children who come to live with host families for two weeks. Those interested should call Bishop at 848-3914.

Bill Reynolds, basketball coach at Southern California College, will conduct a two-week instructional camp, hosted by the Irvine Boys’-Girls’ Club, this summer for boys in grades 4 through 8.

Dates for the camp, limited to a maximum of 36 boys for each age group, are June 23-July 3. The fee of $60 includes daily refreshments, a basketball T-shirt and caps. Camp sessions will be conducted for seventh- and eighth-grade boys from 8 to 10 a.m. and for fourth- through sixth-grade boys from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

The Newport Beach Marriott Hotel and Tennis Club will conduct its Summer Tennis Camp program for beginners, intermediate and high school players, ages 7 through 17. Five two-week sessions are planned, with the first scheduled to begin June 23 and the last to start on Aug. 18.

The Orange Coast College Racquetball Club will host its annual National Warmup Racquetball Tournament June 13-15on OCC’s 13 outdoor courts.

Golden West College sports information director Ken Hill, a former pitcher at UC Irvine, will direct a baseball camp for boys ages 8 through 16 in two weeklong sessions at Golden West.

The first camp will be held June 23-27. Boys 8 through 12 will have their session from 9 a.m. to noon, and boys 13 through 16 will go from 1 to 4 p.m. The second camp will be held July 7-11.

In preparation for his participation in the Race Across America in July, Garden Grove’s Matthew Beerer will be riding his bicycle for 24 hours nonstop around Sennit Avenue, covering 350 to 400 miles beginning Saturday at 10 a.m.

The Newport Beach Parks, Beaches and Recreation Department has scheduled several beach volleyball tournaments, beginning June 14-15 with the novice or unrated players tournament, at the Corona del Mar State Beach.
