Mario Puzo has been signed by Paramount Pictures to write the screenplay for his book “The Godfather, Part III,” which will be produced by former New York Times reporter Nicholas Gage.

Financial terms were not announced.

The film will continue the saga of the Corleone organized crime family first created by Puzo in his best-selling 1969 novel, “The Godfather.”

Puzo also wrote the Oscar-winning screenplays for the 1972 movie version of his book and for the 1974 sequel, “The Godfather, Part II.” Both films won Academy Awards as best picture and garnered a total of 16 Oscar nominations. Puzo’s most recent novel was “The Sicilian.”
