Regarding Jack Mathews’ “Malaise: The Main Feature at Cannes?” (May 30), the dumbest comment of the decade must certainly be attributed to Mathews, who bemoaned the loss of satire (political) and political-analysis films to the point that now we have to settle for films that are almost exclusively entertainment.

Why does he think we shell out 6 bucks to go to the movies? To be entertained, or to be insulted, or flailed with someone’s narrow political opinions that end up being anti-everything?

Entertainment, dear Jack, is what movie-making is all about. Where have you been?

I for one, am sick sick sick and tired of the kind of kinky, anti-social, anti-Establishment, ultra-liberal films Mathews seems to fawn over and call great. The kind of films that forever call our very great country wrong and that forever tear holes into the fabric of our very great system.

And for him to refer to Stallone’s films as “moronic political-action films” is an absolute insult to those who share an opposing political viewpoint to his. And most certainly an insult to the polished film makers who applied their craft so artistically well in the Stallone films.
