Two non-binding measures that would have removed the never completed Embarcadero Freeway, were defeated by voters in Tuesday’s election.

Proposition I, which would have advocated the removal of the waterfront freeway as an eyesore, was turned down 83,528 to 40,106, or 68% top $32%.

Proposition J, backed by Mayor Dianne Feinstein and six supervisors, also would have sought to remove the freeway, replacing it with tree-lined promenades and boulevards, and extending Municipal Transit to the Southern Pacific depot. It lost, 50,970 to 71,480, or 42% to 58%.
