An Iowa State tennis player was charged with involuntary manslaughter a week after he was involved in a car collision that killed Jim Doerr, the school’s tennis coach.
Greg Beers, 20, of Scarborough, Canada, also was charged with drunken driving. The accident occurred June 5 near Ames, Iowa.
Doerr, 29, was a passenger in his own car, which Beers was driving. Authorities say the car veered out of control and into the path of another car, that both men had elevated blood alcohol counts and that six empty beer cans were found in the car. Beers was considered Doerr’s top recruit and was said to be a close friend.
