Reggie’s Version of Brawl Story Is Backed Up by 3 Teammates

Three teammates of Angel outfielder Reggie Jackson have denied a tavern patron’s accusation that his face was slammed on a table after seeking an autograph from Jackson, authorities said Saturday.

Mel Flanagan, assistant Milwaukee County district attorney, said the players told interviewers they saw “no blows, no punches, no shoving.”

Donald Weimer, 26, of Racine, Wis., who required stitches for a cut chin, said Jackson seized him during a postgame incident May 3 in a downtown tavern across the street from the hotel where the team was staying.

Jackson, 40, said last month that Weimer threw pieces of paper plate on the table where he and three teammates were having dinner. He told police he ordered Weimer to leave.

Witnesses said Weimer had asked Jackson unsuccessfully for an autograph and tore up a plate that Jackson had signed for a bartender.

Flanagan said she and District Attorney E. Michael McCann talked a few days ago by telephone with infielders Rob Wilfong and Rick Burleson and pitcher Donnie Moore.

She said the district attorney’s office may decide in a week whether charges should be filed.
