Sunken Barge Explodes; Salvage Diver Is Killed

CAIRO, Ill. —
A sunken barge loaded with corn exploded during salvage operations on the Mississippi River on Monday, killing a diver, officials said. The diver was using an acetylene torch to cut through the Valley Lines & Equipment Co. barge when he apparently hit a pocket of what was thought to be methane gas given off by the corn as it fermented.
