Ayrton Senna of Brazil knocked Nigel Mansell of England off the pole for today’s Detroit Grand Prix Formula One race as his Lotus-Renault was clocked around the 11-turn, 2.5-mile circuit through the streets of downtown Detroit in 1 minute 38.301 seconds, averaging 91.556 m.p.h.

Mansell had earned the provisional pole with a lap of 1:39.490 and an average of 90.461 m.p.h.
