A prisoner who complained of pains in his arms and legs died of cardiac arrest after waiting in a police wagon for more than an hour outside a hospital emergency room, authorities said Sunday.

Officers told the prisoner, arrested Saturday at a night club, that he would have to wait for treatment because the emergency room at D.C. General Hospital was crowded, a police spokesman said. Police had arrested the 28-year-old man on a misdemeanor bench warrant.
