20 Bodies Recovered From Mud Slide in Southern Colombia
Rescue teams Sunday dug out 20 bodies from a mud slide that swept away part of a mountain road in southern Colombia. Police said 15 more people may still be buried.
Red Cross and civil defense rescue teams were at the site in the remote Putumayo region. But four heavy digging machines sent to help were delayed by other landslides blocking the road.
Police in the town of Pasto, near Colombia’s southern border with Ecuador, said that heavy rains in the region since late last week have caused landslides, washing out the road in at least seven places.
Most of the victims of Saturday’s landslide were walking from one bus to another across part of the blocked road when they were hit by the huge slide of mud and rocks, which covered the road for about 300 yards.
