Newport Beach : Councilwoman Heather Won’t Seek Reelection
City Councilwoman Jackie Heather delivered a surprise swan song to her colleagues and the public Monday night, announcing that she will not seek reelection to a third term in November.
Heather, 56, became the second council member this month to announce she will not seek reelection in the fall. Two weeks ago, Councilman Bill Agee, who represents Corona del Mar, said he would not seek reelection to a second term, saying he wanted to spend more time on his professional photography business.
“I’m not planning a full-time career in politics, so I thought it was time to do something else,” said Heather, who noted that she hopes to do some writing in the future. “And I’ve really completed my major goals.”
Heather, who made a political comeback in the 1982 city elections after suffering a stroke, said she was proud of her role in restoring the silt-laden Upper Newport Bay, helping to solve a dispute with the Board of Supervisors over the expansion of John Wayne Airport and sponsoring the creation of a youth center.
Before her election to the City Council in 1978, Heather spent seven years on the Newport Beach Planning Commission.
