A memorial service has been scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday for retired Superior Court Judge Kenneth C. Newell, whose judicial service began in 1926.

Newell, a 1916 graduate of USC Law School, was 95 when he died Monday at a Pasadena hospital.

Newell was a native of Pasadena, where his father was a police officer, and after a few years in private practice after his graduation, was named to that city’s Police Court in 1926. The court was a forerunner of today’s Municipal Court.

He served in that capacity until the late 1930s, returned to private law practice, but in 1947 was named to the Superior Court by then-Gov. Earl Warren.

Newell was a charter member of the Pasadena University Club, first president of the Pasadena Kiwanis Club and a recipient over the years of tributes from the YMCA and the Salvation Army.

Newell, who retired in 1960, is survived by his wife, Helen, a son, Norman, a sister, Mabel Park, and seven grandchildren.
