A tax override of 3.2 cents on each $100 of assessed property valuation was tentatively adopted, 4 to 3, by the Fresno City Council. The funds are needed to raise an estimated $2.2 million to help pay for police and fire pensions. The money would free up other general fund money that now goes to pensions, giving the city more to spend on police services. The override had been challenged in court as a violation of Proposition 13, but the 5th District state Court of Appeal upheld the city’s plan.
