Orange County Roundup : Racquetball Tournament Set for Orange Coast

Some of the nation’s top amateur and professional racquetball players will compete in the 13th Ektelon National Outdoor Racquetball Championships July 4-6 at Orange Coast College.

Reigning indoor national champions Gregg Peck and Lynn Adams will be among the more than 300 players expected to enter the tournament. Adams, from Costa Mesa, is top-ranked on the women’s professional tour. Defending outdoor champions Dan Southern of Huntington Beach and Martha McDonald, four-time outdoor champion Brian Hawkes and Marci Drexler, professional racquetball’s Rookie of the Year in 1985, also are scheduled to participate.

Divisions for the tournament include professional singles and doubles, B singles and doubles, C singles and doubles, senior singles and doubles, masters singles and doubles, junior singles and mixed doubles. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to first- and second-place finishers in each division.

Bobby Riggs, best remembered for his nationally televised challenge match against Billie Jean King, will be among the 300 entrants in the Sea Pointe Seniors’ Tennis Tournament July 7-13 at the Sea Pointe Estates Swim and Racquet Club in San Clemente and the Capistrano Racquet Club in San Juan Capistrano.

The event, sanctioned by the Southern California Tennis Assn., is billed as one of the state’s most prestigious senior tournaments. Players in 12 divisions will compete for $5,000 in prize money.

The divisions are: men’s 50-, 55-, 60-, 65-, 70- and 75-year-old singles and doubles, and women’s 50-, 55-, 60- and 65-year-old singles and doubles. There also will be senior mixed doubles and super senior mixed doubles divisions, said Tony Prodan, the tournament organizer and tennis director at the Capistrano Racquet Club.

A cocktail and dinner party will be July 9 at Sea Pointe Estates. More than $4,000 in door prizes, including tennis equipment and accessories, will be awarded. Tickets for the drawing and party can be purchased by calling Prodan at 493-2354 or the Capistrano Racquet Club at 493-7676.

The March of Dimes, Sports Chalet and Nike will sponsor an 8-kilometer run before Huntington Beach’s parade on July 4. The run will begin at 9 a.m. and be started by Bill Toomey, 1968 Olympic decathlon gold medalist.

The run will raise funds for the March of Dimes. Last year’s run raised nearly $5,000.

The course is two loops on the parade route with the start and finish line near City Hall at Main Street and Yorktown Avenue.

Awards will be presented in 31 categories, ranging from 12-and-under to 60-and-over. There are special awards for Huntington Beach residents, disabled participants, first costumed runner and team.

The Nationwide Professional Football Search’s second annual prep football camp will be in two sessions in July at Laguna Hills High School.

The camp, directed by Hall of Fame receiver Tom Fears, is designed to involve professional players in instruction. Session are July 7-11 and July 14-18.

Camp activities include conditioning, instruction by position, strategy, plays and a mini-pro camp. The camp is non-contact and open to boys and girls 8 to 18. Players will be divided into groups depending on size, skill and age.

The National Fitness Foundation will conduct two free youth fitness camps at UC Irvine in two-week day sessions this summer.

Don Frank, Rancho Santiago College assistant basketball coach, will direct the Rose Drive Friends Basketball Camp for boys and girls in fourth through 12th grade beginning July 28 at Rose Drive Friends Church in Yorba Linda.

The camp features daily instruction, lectures and demonstrations by a staff that includes coaches George Fairchild (La Habra), Steve White (Sunny Hills), Bill Cuccia (Whittier Christian) and Marc Hill (Esperanza).

Enrollment is limited to 64 and lunch is provided daily. The girls’ camp is scheduled for July 28-Aug. 1 and the boys’ camp is Aug. 4-8. For further information, call 996-9030.

Midlands School of Soccer, a series of instructional camps conducted by a father-and-son team of professional coaches from England, will be this summer at Pine Middle School in Los Alamitos.

The camps are open to boys and girls 10 and older with seven weeks of half-day sessions beginning July 14. Morning sessions, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., are reserved for students 13 to 15. Afternoon camps, from 2 to 5 p.m., are for 10- to 12-year-olds.

Ben Schmidt, a two-year starter on the Chapman College men’s volleyball team, was a second-team selection on the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America team. Schmidt had a 3.9 grade-point average as a sports medicine major and graduated magna cum laude this spring. . . . Christ College of Irvine will become a member of the new Golden State Athletic Conference beginning in the 1987-88 school year. The GSAC, established in February, also includes Azusa Pacific, Cal Lutheran, Fresno Pacific, Point Loma Nazarene, Southern California College and Westmont College.
