This Time, Cards Go 17 Innings to Lose
Milt Thompson singled home John Russell from second in the 17th inning to give the Philadelphia Phillies a 2-1 victory over the Cardinals. It was the 16th extra-inning game for the Cardinals, who have lost nine of them.
In the 4-hour 37-minute marathon, Russell beat out an infield hit in the 12th and was sacrificed to second by pitcher Tom Hume, appearing as a pinch-hitter.
Kent Tekulve (3-1), who pitched three innings, got the win.
The only run for the light-hitting Cardinals came in the fifth when Ozzie Smith scored Vince Coleman on a squeeze bunt.
Pitcher Shane Rawley doubled in the third and scored on Jeff Stone’s bloop single for the first run of the game.
