SUMMER LP ROUNDUP : DROLL, DUNCED-OUT

“ANIMAL BOY.” The Ramones. Sire. That familiar wall-o’-chain-saws guitar. . . . Those dunced-out deadpan vocals. . . . That relentless tubular urge. . . . Those stoopid, stoopid, repetitive, repetitive lyrics. . . . Gabba gabba hey! It must be a new Ramones album. Ten years after the Godfathas of Punk (New Yawk division) first burst upon an unsuspecting world, and they haven’t changed a half-wit. Three of these tracks are destined to become Ramones classicks--though don’t expect ‘em to wind up in a wine-cooler commercial in the near future. For one thing, last year’s incendiary import single “Bonzo Goes to Bitburg” (retitled “My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down”) is genuinely too angry, while the impossibly droll funny stuff and the crypto-metal “Somebody Put Something in My Drink” are lyrically out of the question. Side 2 tails off considerably, but this better-than-average effort is just the platter to slap on when the neighbors persist in playing Lionel Richie albums with all their windows open.
