A 44-year-old electrician was killed when the homemade fireworks he was testing blew up, blasting a 20-foot-wide hole in the desert floor, authorities said Saturday.

Charles Schultz of Las Vegas was found dead Saturday morning in the desert west of Las Vegas, Metro Police said. His family had reported him missing.

Schultz went to the desert Friday night, apparently to detonate homemade fireworks, officers said. Police spokeswoman Brenda Boyce said the fireworks apparently all exploded at once.

But she said it was unknown what type of explosive device was used and the time of the accident had not been ascertained.

Boyce said Schultz was alone at the time of the mishap.

Police issued a reminder that fireworks are illegal in Clark County.
