The Virgin Atlantic Challenger II, a 72-foot power boat captained by 35-year-old business tycoon Richard Branson, broke the 34-year-old record for a trans-Atlantic crossing.

The $2.25-million vessel made the 2,949-mile trip from the Ambrose light outside New York harbor to Bishop Rock lighthouse off St. Mary’s on the Isles of Scilly in 3 days 8 hours 31 minutes, breaking by 2 hours 9 minutes the previous record set by the ocean liner SS United States on its maiden voyage in July 1952.

Branson lives on his own island in the Caribbean.
