‘Star Wars’ and World Peace

Ernest Conine makes a comment in his column (Editorial Pages, June 16) that Reagan would like to go down in history as the President who “rendered nuclear missiles ‘obsolete’ ”. And Mr. Reagan believes he can do this through the “Star Wars” program.
The only way to render nuclear missiles obsolete is to make war obsolete. If people and nations decide that violent action is not the way to solve conflict, there will be no need for an overpriced and impossible defense ‘umbrella’. The mode of thinking would be one of diplomacy and of give-and-take.
Technology is not the way out of the nuclear missile problem. A technological way can always be found to outdo the other guy’s defenses. But a change in thinking could work wonders. It’s the last option we haven’t tried.
