A lawyer for Carson City Councilman Walter J. (Jake) Egan denied that Egan ever took secret payments from convicted political corruption figure W. Patrick Moriarty, or ever used his political position for “any consideration other than the best interest of the people of Carson.” The comments from attorney Robert Gaunt came in opening defense statements at the halfway point of Egan’s trial in Los Angeles federal court on 12 counts of mail fraud and extortion in connection with his alleged involvement with Moriarty, who testified for the prosecution that Egan extorted about $30,000 from him in personal and political contributions in return for support of a planned mobile home park.
