President Reagan called on Americans Wednesday to ring bells throughout the land at 7:53 tonight to herald the relighting of the torch on the restored Statue of Liberty.

In a proclamation designating today as Let Freedom Ring Day 1986, he said: “What could be more fitting than to celebrate this moment with the joyful clamor of bells?”

The President said great occasions through the centuries have been marked by the ringing of bells. He noted that, when America’s independence was proclaimed in Philadelphia two centuries ago, “the Liberty Bell announced the glad news.”

The proclamation was authorized by Congress.

In addition, the President signed a proclamation designating Friday as National Immigrants Day, noting that since 1820 more than 52 million immigrants have come to the United States from all over the world.
