‘OUT OF AFRICA’ BOOSTS PARK ATTENDANCE

The Hollywood hit movie “Out of Africa” is luring U.S. tourists to East African safari parks despite widespread fears of terrorist attacks abroad, tour operators have reported

Cautious American travelers are avoiding routes that would take them through European cities where terrorists have operated in the last year, the operators say.

But thousands are braving the trip to East Africa, attracted by the glamour and greens hills of Kenya depicted in Sydney Pollack’s movie “Out of Africa,” which won seven Oscar awards this year.

“It was a godsend. Without it, we would have suffered far more than we did in the American market,” said David Markham, spokesman for the Abercrombie & Kent concern that does a heavy business with American tourists.

North Americans account for 11% of annual visitors to Kenya. About 62,000 tourists opted for Kenyan safari-type holidays last year--up 24% from 1984. No figures were available for 1986.
