$100 Million to Aid Nicaragua’s Contras: Pro and Con

As I read your editorial of June 27, “An OK for War”, I could not help marking the following excerpts in reference to President Reagan’s policies involving Nicaragua: “his dirty little war,” “Red-baiting,” “Nicaragua . . . a poor, feeble nation,” “his futile war” and the “folly of his bloody policies in the region.” You also call the leadership in Managua “an inept group of ideologues who are no threat to the U.S.” Such uninformed opinion on the “real issue,” as you call it, in Central America is almost criminal.

The “real issue” in Central America is the calculated plan of the Soviet Union to establish a beachhead on the mainland of the Western Hemisphere. If the Russians are successful, they will work their way south and north of Nicaragua, toppling all the Central American nations until they get to Mexico.
