Irvine Divers’ Li Sets 3-Meter Springboard Meet Mark

Hong Ping Li of the Irvine Divers set a meet record in the three-meter springboard Saturday to win the event at the Southern California Open and Regional Age-Group Olympics at the Mission Viejo International Diving Complex.

Li, a silver medalist in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles behind Greg Louganis, scored 656.05 points.

Scott Fosdick of the Mission Viejo Nadadores was second with 580.20. Other Nadadore finishers were J. D. McGregor, fourth (543.65); Jeff Simmons, seventh (465.70), and Dale Caldwell, eighth (451.50).

Brian Earley, who had won both the 13-14 age group one-meter and three-meter springboards on Thursday and Friday, dove in the open competition and finished 11th. The 14-year-old scored 435.55.

In the one-meter springboard, McGregor won with a total of 554.4 and Fosdick was second at 553.38. Simmons (485.10) was third.

In the women’s diving, Karla Goltman of the Nadadores won both the one- and three-meter competitions.

In the one-meter diving, she scored 401.95 to defeat Britt Williams (380.80), also of the Nadadores. This was Williams’ first competition in three months after having a pin put in her shoulder, damaged by the impact of platform diving.

Nadadore Julie Handren finished fourth (369.70).

In the three-meter event, Goltman scored 403.65 for the victory. Williams, who dives at ULCA with Goltman, was second at 397.25. Nadadore Andy Littlefield (389.10) was fifth and Heather Hurt (373.60) was sixth.

The meet concludes today with age-group and open competition off the platform dive starting at 10.
