Potentially valuable sulfide mineral deposits were found on the Pacific Ocean floor about 150 miles west of Eureka on the undersea Gorda Ridge where U.S. Geological Survey scientists earlier discovered hot-water vents. The U.S. Minerals Management Service has been working with California and Oregon for two years to find hot-water vents and the sulfide deposits that occur there. The Sea Cliff, a three-person U.S. Navy submarine, is scheduled to begin a four-week exploration of the area later this month.
