Private donations to a special government fund to aid victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster have reached $448 million, including $800,000 from the United States and other foreign nations, Radio Moscow said Sunday.

The fund, opened after the April 26 accident, will be used to build houses and provide food and clothing for the victims, the official radio said.

More than 100,000 people were evacuated from within a 19-mile radius of the Chernobyl nuclear power station, 600 miles southwest of Moscow, following the disaster, which has left at least 26 people dead.
