A strong earthquake shook northeastern Tibet today, China’s official New China News Agency said, but there were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries in the area, which is sparsely populated by nomadic herdsmen.

The quake, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, occurred in the northwestern part of Tibet’s Rutog county, the State Seismological Bureau in Peking said. There was no telephone contact with the region because telephone lines had been knocked out previously by rain and wind, the bureau said.
