Anaheim : Sign Placement Banned on Public Rights of Way

Share

Anaheim City Council members Tuesday adopted an ordinance that bans the placement of political signs--as well as signs for garage sales, rental housing and any other cardboard messages--on public rights of way.

The law, which took effect Tuesday, allows the city to remove illegal signs and charge their owners for removing and storing them. The ordinance also sets a $50 fine for violations and a $50 reward for information that results in a conviction.

Mayor Donald R. Roth, who is running for a county Board of Supervisors seat in the November election, said a proliferation of political signs in the city made the ordinance necessary.

In Orange, where Mayor James H. Beam is running for the same supervisorial seat, the council earlier this year adopted a resolution prohibiting political signs on public rights of way, City Manager William Little said. But the city’s measure does not set fines or charge candidates to retrieve their signs, Little said.

“We’d rather get the signs down and not worry about the paper work,” Little said.
