A teen-age driver was killed and his passenger injured late Monday when they crashed in trying “to see how fast the car would go,” California Highway Patrol spokesman Ken Daily said.

Driver Jason Lance, 17, of Laguna Hills was pronounced dead at the scene on Oso Parkway. Eric Jacobson, also 17 and of Laguna Hills, suffered injuries that included serious scrapes over 20% of his body, according to the CHP.

The two were traveling about 100 m.p.h. on Oso in a Datsun 280Z when the car failed to make a long, sweeping curve and went out of control, Daily said. The car skidded across the highway, struck the right curb and rode the curb for some distance before it hit a roadway sign and flipped over, Daily said. Both youths were ejected from the car’s open T-top, Daily said. Neither was wearing a seat belt.

Jacobson, who reportedly told officers the two were “trying to see how fast the car would go,” was transported to Mission Community Hospital in Mission Viejo, where he was listed in stable condition.
