Local News in Brief : Moorpark to Vote on 2 Growth Initiatives
The Moorpark City Council early Tuesday morning unanimously adopted a ballot initiative that aims to limit the city’s population, now about 16,000, to 33,878 at the turn of the century.
Voter approval of the initiative on Nov. 4 would allow no more than 5,758 new dwelling units from 1987 through 1999.
An alternative initiative written by a residents’ group has already qualified for the ballot.
In a separate action, council members appointed Planning Commissioner Jim Hartley to the City Council to fill the vacancy left by the resignation June 23 of Mayor James D. Weak, who was diagnosed as having leukemia.
Hartley, 47, an insurance agent and nine-year resident of Moorpark, will serve as councilman until the Nov. 4 election. He did not rule out running for a seat on the council, but said he hopes to return to the Planning Commission next year.
