A Moratorium on Ethnic Intolerance
It is time for a moratorium on intolerance in Monterey Park. We have a great city, with even greater people who are all in their own ways trying to make this a better place to live. We can’t continue to progress toward excellence in living if we are to become polarized in perception or in fact as it relates to ethnic groups.
The Asians in our community have every right to be here and to prosper in the “American Dream.” Native-born Americans, themselves descendants of the immigrants of the world, can no longer continue to feel that they are somehow the chosen ones, entitled to special status because of their birthright.
The time is right for each of us, immigrant or native-born, to put aside our fears, jealousies and intolerances for others who are different than we are. In the end, time will cause us all to become one. That change will happen despite anything else that may occur in the process. The most difficult chore before all of us is to put aside our personal feelings now and get on with taking part in this inevitable change so that we control it rather than having it control us.
Councilman Chris Housemann, Mayor G. Monty Manibog, hang in there, because the good and right-thinking citizens of Monterey Park, the majority of our residents, support and salute you. God bless America and you for your courage and leadership.
