The board of directors of the San Diego County United Way has approved the allocation of $9.8 million to support 170 community programs from 81 health and human care agencies.

David J. Primuth, United Way’s new chairman of the board and chief volunteer officer, said the allocation is part of a record $17.5 million to be distributed during the 1986-87 fiscal year. This allows significant increases for programs evaluated as having high priority in serving San Diego County’s needs.

These programs include information and referral services, which received a 78.2% increase in funding; child abuse and domestic violence, with a 54.7% increase; services for senior citizens, with a 43.4% increase, and services for the homeless, with a 30.6% increase.

More than 150 volunteers spent 6,000 hours on United Way’s new allocation procedures. This process included training sessions for volunteers, who then visited agency sites, heard presentations by agency leaders and professional staff, reviewed budgets and debated the best use of money for urgent local needs.
