The top PLO official in Jordan left the country today, saying the government’s decision to expel him and shut the offices of Yasser Arafat’s guerrilla group will mean increased military action in Israeli-held lands.

“If they want to isolate the PLO from dealing with the people in the occupied lands, they will fail,” Abu Jihad told reporters shortly before leaving Amman.

Abu Jihad, the nom de guerre of Khalil Wazir, kissed his family, said farewell to his followers, then got into a car and drove away from the home he had occupied since late 1982 after being evacuated from Lebanon, which was then under Israeli invasion.

He said he was driving to Iraq en route to the Palestine Liberation Organization headquarters in Tunisia.
