Witch Brews Up a Protest With Program
More than 1,000 people gathered outside a library Saturday as a witch gave a two-hour educational slide show on her craft. There were no arrests or incidents.
Soon after the witch, Zsuszanna Budapest of Oakland, was invited to speak at the Santa Teresa branch library as part of a public lecture series, angry parents and Christian groups had promised to disrupt the presentation in protest.
On Saturday, a handful of Budapest’s supporters showed up for the lecture but most of the crowd expressed opposition to her lecture.
“I’m not prepared to die for a slide show,” Budapest remarked before starting her talk. She had received death threats during the past week.
Budapest was paid $50 for her appearance.
