Police arrested two people demonstrating for the release of political prisoners in the southwestern city of Wroclaw on Saturday, a supporter of the outlawed Solidarity movement said.

Anna Borgonska, 25, and Leszek Budrewicz, a 30-year-old poet, were detained by police as they stood in the town center bearing placards saying “Release All Political Prisoners,” Solidarity supporter Josef Pinior said. The protest gathered about 100 onlookers.

A total of 18 people were detained in similar protests Tuesday and Wednesday, he said.

About 250 people are held in Polish jails on crimes of a political nature, although they are not accorded political prisoner status. The government has promised to announce a limited amnesty later this month but has indicated that top Solidarity union detainees will not be freed.
