For the 14th year, Great Western Savings has donated a house to be rehabilitated by students from inner-city high schools, to be sold upon completion of the work at the end of August.

This year’s project, a three-bedroom house at 1452 East 142nd St., Compton, will be renovated by students in the Youth Housing Opportunities Program in cooperation with the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Home Builders Council, a trade organization.

Boys and girls will participate in the project and will be paid for their full-time work, according to Bill Gray, a retired industrial arts instructor for the school district who has headed the program since its inception.

“We will bring in the experts--plumbers, electricians, drywall people--for everything that requires city inspection, but the professionals all have promised to show the kids how they do each job,” Gray added.
