Protestants Riot in North Ireland 1690 Celebration

BELFAST, Northern Ireland — Gangs of masked men wielding axes and cudgels smashed Catholic homes, gunmen shot two people and Protestants attacked police today during rioting in Northern Ireland.
Police said 187 people--128 of them police officers--were injured and 81 homes, most of them occupied by Catholics, were the target of attacks or threatening telephone calls during the past weekend.
The violence occurred during Protestant celebrations to mark the victory of Protestant King William of Orange over Catholic King James II in the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.
