Helix Systems Ltd., a Canadian computer company whose operations are mainly in Canoga Park, named Richard H. Loeffler chairman and chief executive.

Loeffler will report to Robert L. Abrams, founder and president of the company. Abrams was previously chairman and chief executive but relinquished those titles because the “workload was quite demanding,” a company spokesman said.

Loeffler was previously president and chief operating officer of Los Angeles-based TRE Corp., a $140-million-a-year company that makes aerospace and defense-related high-technology products.

TRE chairman Leopold S. Wyler declined in a telephone interview to comment on why Loeffler left the company. Ivan Obelensky, who follows TRE for Sterling Grace, a New York brokerage, said Loeffler is “an extremely bright man who got caught in a power play.” Loeffler did not return phone calls last week.

Founded in December, 1983, Helix makes durable computer memory systems designed to withstand harsh military and industrial environments. The company lost $1.7 million on sales of $1 million in 1985, attributing the loss to research and development expenses.

The company, whose stock is traded on the Vancouver Stock Exchange, has 35 employees.
