Britain’s Steve Cram, aiming for an 800-1,500 double in the Commonwealth Games next week, won the 800 meters in 1 minute 43.62 seconds in the Nikaia track and field meet at Nice, France. Cram’s time was the best in the world this year.

In other races, Evelyn Ashford won the women’s 200 meters in 22.38, while Calvin Smith was upset in the 100 by Chidi Imoh of Nigeria, who was timed in 10.22. Smith and France’s Bruno Marie-Rose ran 10.34.

Steve Scott won the mile in 3:52.13.

In the men’s 3,000, Steve Ovett dropped with about 200 meters to go, holding his right leg as Belgium’s Vincent Rousseau went on to win in 7:42.15.
