Typhoon Peggy killed 172 people in southeastern China’s Guangdong province, disaster officials said Wednesday.

The officials, calling the typhoon the region’s worst disaster in nearly four decades, said also that it injured 1,250 persons, destroyed 214,000 homes and damaged or washed away 2,200 bridges and 2,542 miles of electric power lines. They estimated damage at $470 million and said about 1.35 million acres of farmland were flooded by Friday’s storm.

The typhoon also killed at least 93 in the northern Philippines before hitting China.
