Former world boxing champion Ruben Olivares, arrested for marijuana possession in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, was released after tests showed he is addicted to the substance, the government newspaper El Nacional said.
State police arrested Olivares and two friends in Salina Cruz, on the Pacific Coast, after they were told someone was asking where he could buy marijuana, the newspaper said. A search found one marijuana cigarette and two butts.
Prosecutors ordered the three released on Tuesday because “they only carried one marijuana cigarette each for personal consumption,” an amount they said is legal if the person is proven to be addicted to the substance.
