ORANGE PEALS

“THIS IS THE VOICE.” Agent Orange. Enigma. Most of the music on this Fullerton-based band’s third release consists of a fast and furious guitar-bass-drums assault that blends a frenetic punk beat with the raw sound of a seasoned surf/garage band. The lyrics, centering for the most part on paranoia and alienation, are slightly creepy yet insightful, particularly on “I Kill Spies” and “Bite the Hand That Feeds (Part 1).” But this disc doesn’t hold up too well on repeat listenings--Mike Palm’s none-too-varied guitar work and his monotonic vocals wear thin and you start wishing his vocals were half as expressive as the words he sings.
