KIM’S FADE TO GARAY

“LIGHTHOUSE.” Kim Carnes. EMI America. This album marks a reunion for Carnes and producer Val Garay, who collaborated on 1981’s Grammy-winner “Bette Davis Eyes.” While no track here is as provocative and intriguing as that quirky, rock-edged smash, neither is this a wash-out. Instead, it’s a likable set of good-natured--if not particularly distinctive or memorable--light rockers. If Carnes and Garay don’t win points for originality, at least they’re copping from good sources. “Divided Hearts” has the rhythmic pulse of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark”; “Black and White” borrows the key lyric idea of Paul Simon’s “Kodachrome.” It’s probably too much to expect another “Bette Davis Eyes” from Carnes, and, given that, this album can be accepted on its own merits as a modest success.
